Brett Kavanaugh

The most worrying thing about Brett Kavanaugh’s hearing before the senate judiciary committee was not his overly aggressive attitude, or the fact that he was completely disrespectful towards those senators asking him questions about his alleged assault against Christine Blasey Ford in the early 1980's. It is his complete sense of entitlement, the fact that he is acting like a victim, acting like the questions posed to him by the committee Democrats were ridiculous and pointless. Watching him rage, shout and cry during his statement to the senate only further emphasizes how unfit he is to be on the Supreme Court.

(FYI: crying does not always imply innocence. I cried when my mom caught me at a club when I was supposed to be home sleeping. I was crying because I got caught, and I would say Brett Kavanaugh was doing the same damn thing.)

Brett Kavanaugh at the Senate Testimony

Christine Blasey Ford gave a compelling, heartfelt statement in which she had to relive a part of her life which was difficult and traumatizing. She was dignified. She was genuine and she was sincere. Mr. Kavanaugh, on the other hand, was belligerent, bitter and for me, made it a lot easier to see him as a sloppy, aggressive drunk.

Brett Kavanaugh does not show himself to be an innocent man. With thinly veiled disgust, I watched as he repeatedly dodged questions about whether or not he would submit himself to an FBI investigation, which would surely help prove his so-called innocence? We all saw him rudely talk back to Democratic senators. When senator Amy Klobucher (D-Minnesota) asked him whether he had ever blacked out from excessive alcohol consumption, instead of answering, he posed the question back to her. No matter that it was completely disrespectful, but the thing is, Mr. Kavanaugh, she is not the one who has been accused (more than once, may I add) of sexual assault. The sense of entitlement is rage inducing, and he presents himself as someone who has been wrongly accused, and believes it is completely beneath him to even have to sit before the senate committee.

Yet, Mr. Kavanaugh will probably be voted into the Supreme Court. Disappointing, but not surprising, unfortunately. He is backed by most Republican senators, and of course, President Trump, who tweeted on September 27th: Judge Kavanaugh showed America exactly why I nominated him. His testimony was powerful, honest, and riveting. Democrats’ search and destroy strategy is disgraceful and this process has been a total sham and effort to delay, obstruct, and resist. The Senate must vote!

I am not an American citizen, but I am hoping next year to attend university in the States. I do wonder sometimes if I want to live, however temporarily, in a country where some of the most important figures are sexual predators and people who think it doesn't matter. How must it feel, for boys and girls, women and men, but especially women, that Mr. Kavanaugh, someone who has been accused of sexual assault, could be voted into a position of power, and could become part of an integral part of America's highest court, is disgusting.

Sexual assault allegations aside, Kavanaugh has proven himself to be unfit to serve on the Supreme Court. A judge should be impartial, in order to do their job the best they can. Like he said in 2015, "a judge must keep their emotions in check", and should not be a "political partisan". However, Kavanaugh has shown the world that he is not capable of being impartial, or maintaining neutrality. He has come across as over-emotional, hostile, and as an entitled liar. A 'Devil's Triangle' is not a drinking game, but rather sexual acts between two men and one woman, which a quick Google search could tell you. How can it be that America may be on its way to having a Supreme Court judge who commits perjury? It conveys a lack of respect towards the whole judiciary system, which is shocking, especially from someone who believes he deserves a seat on the Supreme Court.

His confirmation process has been tough, fine, but then can you imagine how difficult the process has been for the women who have stepped forward with allegations against him, not for self-gain, but to help America make the right choice, to help their nation see what kind of man Brett Kavanaugh is. These women have had their lives turned upside down, and what have they gained from it? Yes, immense amounts of support from many, many people, but let's not forget there are people who believe in Kavanaugh's innocence. So yes, support, but also, threatening messages, not just to these women, but their families. It can be argued that from coming forward, they have gained nothing good from it, because even after the hearing, the outcome was not much clearer than it was before.

Brett Kavanaugh should withdraw from the Supreme Court nomination, not as a declaration of his guilt or of his innocence, but because he has proven repeatedly he is undeserving and unworthy to sit on the Supreme Court. Whether or not Kavanaugh's confirmation goes through, his credibility has been ruined. If he is confirmed, no one will forget how he came to his position, and no one will forget the kind of man he portrayed himself to be.

Your lies wil outrun you, Mr. Kavanaugh, and I for one cannot wait to see how it pans out for you from then.
